The Eden Project Conference

Posted on 08/06/2007

Conference - Sense of Place: regeneration, 3rd to 7th September, The Eden Project, Cornwall

Carnegie RARP partners, The Sensory Trust and Eden Project are hosting the conference above between the 3rd and 7th September 2007. Sense of Place- regeneration is an inspiring blend of talks, activities and visits designed around a two-day conference. It is for anyone interested in critical questions about community regeneration. What does successful place-based regeneration look like? How can connections be remade and strengthened between people and place? How can communities reinvent themselves in times of rapid change yet still honour the past? What tools and examples exist to help with planning and designing public spaces and to give meaning to local cultural strategies and regeneration policies?

Positive Social Change - Role of Foundations

Posted on 08/02/2007

The Prime Minister recently set out his vision of a partnership in which government empowers and enables individuals and organisations working for positive social change www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/third_sector/news/news_stories/070724_vision.asp
A report to be published later this year, based on research conducted by Carnegie UK Trust, will highlight the roles of foundations in contributing to lasting, positive change for public benefit. Diana Leat, author of the report, said: 'We underestimate the importance of charitable foundations when we focus only on their money. This report will illustrate the huge potential, and varied roles. of foundations in contributing to change with impact way beyond their immediate grantees'.

Spending More or Spending Smarter?

The gifts of Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Paul Omidiyar,  and the UK’s own Tom Hunter, among others, make head line news across the world; and politicians of all persuasions, and throughout the world, are philanthropists' new best friends. More money going to support good causes and the most disadvantaged in societies globally is indeed good news – but there is more, and less, to achieving sustainable social change than money.

Phil Hope, the new Minister for the Third Sector speaks at Inquiry/NCVO event

Posted on 07/18/2007

The incoming Minister of the Third Sector speaks at the Inquiry/NCVO event. Nick Cater of Third Sector online writes:

Charities and campaigners are key partners in government plans to transform society and its citizens, according to Phil Hope, the incoming third sector minister.

Hope admitted he was updating his “slightly 1990s view of the sector” to incorporate its decade of expansion under Labour and declared his confidence in its future. He also suggested business could be a far greater funder of charities.

“You can go, and are going, where government cannot go,” Hope told the NCVO and Carnegie UK Third Sector Foresight conference on the future of civil society in London yesterday, his first official engagement in his new post. “We cannot do what we want to do in transforming lives without partnership with the sector. Social change and putting civil society at the heart of government is what we are all about.”
