Carnegie Medal

The Scottish Parliament hosted the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy ceremony on 4 October 2005.

The event honoured international philanthropists and it was the first time the ceremony has been held outside the United States.

Following the 2005 Medal Awards Cermony in Edinburgh, a Permanent Secretariat has been established in New York to develop the Awards Ceremony and International Symposium. The 2007 event will be held in Pittsburgh.

The International Symposium

Prior to the Medal ceremony, the Trust organised the first Carnegie International Philanthropy Symposium, inviting over twenty international commentators including Mary Robinson, former UNHCR Commissioner and President of Ireland, environmentalist Jonathon Porrit, civil society activist Kumi Naidoo and film Director Richard Curtis, to present a number of global challenges to philanthropists and foundations. The Symposium was attended by over 450 guests from the worlds of philanthropy, politics, the media, non governmental organisations and foundations from Europe, North America and Australia.
